Left-arm spin-bowling allrounder will work with a brand new coaching staff as DC aim for first title
In a significant development for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, the Delhi Capitals have appointed India's spin-bowling all-rounder, Axar Patel, as their new captain. This decision comes after former captain Rishabh Pant's transfer to the Lucknow Super Giants.
Axar Patel's Journey with Delhi Capitals
Axar Patel has been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals since joining the franchise in 2019. Over 82 appearances, he has accumulated 967 runs and taken 62 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 7.09. His consistent performances have made him the longest-serving player in the current squad.
Leadership Transition
The captaincy role became available following Rishabh Pant's move to the Lucknow Super Giants. Initially, the franchise considered KL Rahul for the leadership position; however, Rahul declined the offer, leading to Axar Patel's elevation as captain.
Axar Patel's Reaction
Expressing his gratitude, Axar Patel stated:
> "It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I'm deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me."
He further acknowledged his growth as both a cricketer and an individual during his tenure with the Capitals and expressed confidence in leading the team forward.
Recent Achievements
Axar Patel recently played a pivotal role in India's Champions Trophy victory, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. His leadership experience includes serving as India's Twenty20 International vice-captain in January, showcasing his readiness for this new responsibility.

The Delhi Capitals are set to commence their IPL 2025 campaign on March 24 in Visakhapatnam, facing the Lucknow Super Giants. With Axar Patel at the helm, the team aims to build on their past performances and strive for their maiden IPL title.
